Clicker success story: breaking down learning barriers and boosting student confidence

We love that our Clicker success stories highlight how the software can transform learning for entire cohorts of students. Often educators are trying to find a solution for a particular group of students who are struggling with writing, but when Clicker is introduced, they realize the benefits it offers to all learners.

Rose Racicot is an occupational therapist and assistive technology specialist. Recently retired from roles at Kent and Bellevue School Districts, Rose continues to work part-time for the Special Education Technology Center (SETC) at Central Washington University. Over her career, Rose has embraced the universal benefits of Clicker and has shared her fantastic successes with us.

Rose was frequently receiving referrals for students who were frustrated, discouraged, and exhibited behavioral challenges in the classroom. She believed these behaviors were often the result of an inability to express themselves or effectively communicate.

Rose was looking for a learning tool that would help the entire class (not just a single student) to:

  • overcome their writing barriers,
  • remove obstacles hindering self-expression, and
  • promote their independence in the classroom.

After being introduced to Clicker by a general education tech specialist, Rose realized that it was the assistive technology she needed. It would give students the freedom to select the supports they wanted and increase their independence and confidence in the classroom.

“I knew it would help meet learning goals because if you had content you wanted the whole class to access, you could create supports at different levels and introduce it to everyone. Clicker gives you a vehicle to differentiate the same content for all students very quickly and easily.”

The impact of Clicker was incredible! Rose found that through the consistent use of Clicker, students were able to complete class assignments that they would have struggled with in the past.

With Clicker’s built-in accessibility, students who previously had difficulty focusing on a writing task were now regularly spending 30 minutes on their writing activities. The use of Clicker:

  • boosted student motivation,
  • improved their self-confidence, and
  • increased inclusivity by eliminating the need to separate students with special needs from the general education classroom.
