AI safeguarding

Introduction

Clicker Writer includes optional AI-powered features designed to help teachers create Clicker Sets on any topic to support students’ writing. The AI is intended for educator use and is not designed for direct student use. These features are built to be safe, bounded, and appropriate for education settings, and to give schools and educators full control over whether and how AI is available.

This page outlines the safeguarding principles, technical controls and usage boundaries that apply to AI in Clicker Writer.

  1. Key safeguarding principles
  2. Educator and school control
  3. AI behaviour for education settings
  4. No personal data use
  5. Safeguarding and compliance
  6. Summary

1. Key safeguarding principles

Clicker Writer’s AI features are designed around the following principles:

  • Teacher control first – AI features are disabled by default and must be explicitly enabled.
  • Teacher-focused support – AI supports teachers in creating Clicker Sets for students; it does not work directly with students or provide student-facing interaction.
  • Supports teaching, not student work – AI assists teachers in preparing resources; it does not assess students' written work.
  • Clear boundaries – The AI is constrained to relevant writing support and avoids unsafe topics.

2. Educator and school control

Optional feature

AI features in Clicker Writer are optional. Schools and organizations decide whether to enable them.

Educator-level control

Individual educators can control access to AI features using a simple on/off switch within Clicker Writer. This helps ensure that students cannot encounter the AI feature unless it has been deliberately enabled.

Organization-wide protection

In addition to educator-level control, AI access can be protected across the entire organization using a 6‑digit PIN. This PIN is set and managed by the organization’s Subscription Manager at apps.cricksoft.com, helping ensure that AI use aligns with organizational safeguarding and acceptable use policies. Organization-wide controls override individual educator settings.

3. AI behaviour for education settings

The AI in Clicker Writer is not a general-purpose chatbot.

It is specifically designed to:

  • Support the creation of writing resources (e.g. for sentence building and topical word banks)
  • Remain within an educational context
  • Avoid conversational, personal or speculative responses

The AI is explicitly constrained and is designed to ensure that it:

  • Does not ask personal questions
  • Does not generate adult, unsafe or inappropriate content
  • Does not provide advice beyond Clicker Writer’s scope

4. No personal data use

  • The AI features in Clicker Writer are designed for teacher use and are designed so that personal data is not needed
  • AI-assisted creation of Clicker Sets does not involve supplying any identifying information
  • Use of AI takes place within the school’s or organization’s existing data protection, safeguarding, and acceptable use frameworks
  • Clicker does not store individual AI conversations. For safeguarding and quality monitoring, we record only high‑level topic categories, aggregated at the global level, with no personal data and no tracking of individual users
  • User input is not used to train AI models or LLMs.

5. Safeguarding and compliance

Clicker Writer’s AI safeguards are designed to support:

  • Safeguarding and student protection policies
  • Acceptable use policies
  • Applicable data protection and education-sector expectations
  • Relevant guidance on the safe and effective use of generative AI in education

In particular, the design and use of AI in Clicker Writer has been shaped by published guidance on the safe and effective use of generative AI in education, including the importance of teacher-led use, clear boundaries, safeguarding, and minimizing risk where evidence on student use is still emerging.

AI features are intended to be low risk by design, with multiple layers of control and restriction rather than reliance on monitoring or after-the-fact intervention.

6. Summary

Clicker Writer embeds AI responsibly by combining:

  • Explicit teacher control
  • Technical constraints on AI behaviour
  • Age-appropriate design
  • Clear, explainable boundaries

This allows teachers to benefit from AI-assisted resource creation while maintaining high safeguarding standards.
